Bird Flu Case in North Wales - Eleanor Burnham Comment

3.00.05pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 24th May 2007

Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, has given her reaction to today's announcement of an outbreak of bird flu on a farm in North Wales.

The outbreak on a farm in Conwy concerns the less virulent H7 strain of bird flu from a batch of Rhode Island Red chickens purchased two weeks ago. Two adults associated with the farm have shown flu symptoms and receiving treatment as a precaution, however health officials are stressing that this is a low pathogenic strain of the virus which should not cause serious illness in humans.

Ms Burnham said: "Clearly the source of the outbreak must be investigated in detail, we need to know how and why bird flu can have appeared here in North Wales.

"I am relieved to learn that this is not the more virulent H5N1 strain of the virus, but a lesser strain that should not cause serious illness in people. However it is important that the Wales and GB contingency plans are implemented in full.

"A 1km exclusion zone is now in force around the property and people across North Wales have been warned to be diligent for any signs of illness in their poultry.

"We should let the professionals get on with their job in dealing with this incident. After last year's outbreak in Scotland and the more recent incident involving the Bernard Matthews firm, lessons should have been learned that mean this outbreak can be dealt with swiftly and efficiently."
