Burnham Leads Call for Reinstating North Wales Committee
3.32.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 6th Jun 2007
Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales is petitioning the Welsh Assembly Government to re-instate a regional committee to represent the needs and interests of North Wales.
Supported by 8 other North Wales AMs, Ms Burnham will be presenting signatures to the Welsh Assembly under standing order 20.1 which will mean a motion calling for a continuing North Wales committee will come before the Assembly to be debated in the Senedd.
Ms Burnham said: "The North Wales Regional Committee is of utmost importance to our region. It gives us a forum in which the needs, opinions and interests of people, organizations and politicians across the North can be voiced.
"With the Labour government's newly announced M4 cabinet, without a single AM from North Wales, it is now more important than ever that we make the voices of our constituents loud and clear in Cardiff Bay.
Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones, Janet Ryder, Alun Ffred Jones, Gareth Jones, and Conservatives Darren Millar, Mark Isherwood and Brynle Williams have all added their names to the call for a continued Regional Committee for North Wales.
Ms Burnham added: "North Wales regional committees are held from Anglesey to Wrexham and everywhere in between. They give people a chance to debate the topics and issues most important to them and crucially they form a basis for the affecting the work and the actions of Assembly.
"I look forward to having a transparent and open debate on the future of a North Wales Regional Committee early on in the new Assembly term."
