More needs to be done to promote equality of opportunities in Wales - Burnham

12.00.00am GMT Tue 6th Nov 2007

Eleanor Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Equal Opportunities, commented on the Welsh Assembly Government's 8th Annual Report on Equality saying that much more needs to be done in promote equality of opportunities throughout Wales.

Speaking in Plenary, Ms Burnham said:

"This report notes that there remains room for improvement regarding the difficulty of attracting women, minority ethnic groups and disabled people to apply for public appointments.

"It is important to communicate with ethnic minorities in an inclusive way to encourage them to feel comfortable about applying to work for the Welsh Assembly Government and other public bodies across Wales. I fully support the current ground breaking scheme, Operation Black Vote, encouraging BME individuals to engage in the political process by shadowing Assembly Members (AM) from all the main political groups."

Ms Burnham also added:

"People who suffer from mental health problems are too often forgotten. There should be greater efforts to bring them within the equality agenda and take account of their needs in a broader way. They are some of the most disadvantaged people in Wales, who often find it difficult to access the opportunities and in fact everyday activities the rest of us take for granted"
